Business Advice from Billionaire Mark Cuban
Who is Mark Cuban? You may have seen Mark Cuban, owner of MicroSolutions and Broadcast.com, on the hit series The Shark Tank. He's also worth 2.3 Billion dollars and is one of the 400 Richest Americans according to Forbes. So why is Mark SO successful? Here are 5 of his success secrets.
#1: Always Be Selling
Sales are the lifeblood of any business and represent the only way that you can make any money, but many people are afraid to sell. Remember, however, that sales isn’t some sleazy affair where you “trick” people into buying from you. Rather, it’s about solving other people’s problems—and that makes you a hero. Before you even start your company you should have some idea of how you’ll make sales.
#2: You Need Social Proof
Mark Cuban began his business by giving his services away for free. Customers want to go where customers are as nobody ever wants to feel like they are the only person going out on a limb. Don’t be afraid to give something away for free if it will gain you a customer for life. Over the lifetime of your business the value of repeat customers will far outweigh the amount of money that you can squeeze out of any one deal.
#3: Listen to Your Customers
You will build your business by making your customers happy, and that doesn’t happen simply because you make educated guesses. Welcome customer feedback, even negative feedback. It’s a chance to learn exactly what will make your customers come back again and again.
#4: Know What You’re Best At
Nobody can be great at everything. Instead, evaluate what you do best and focus on doing those things better than anybody else. Play to your strengths; don’t waste all your time trying to improve your weaknesses.
#5: Be Obsessed
Don’t start a business unless you’re absolutely obsessed with it. Cuban goes against conventional wisdom by stressing that you should not have an exit strategy. “If you have an exit strategy,” he warns, “it’s not an obsession.”
